What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional digestive disorder that affects the large intestine. It is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, excessive gas, constipation, diarrhea, or alternating bowel habits. Many patients also experience a feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation, mucus in stool, and discomfort after meals.

Unlike some digestive diseases, IBS does not cause structural damage to the intestines, but it can significantly affect digestive function and overall quality of life. Symptoms often worsen with stress, irregular eating habits, unhealthy diet, or poor digestion.

IBS is typically a long-term condition that may fluctuate in severity. While conventional treatments mainly focus on controlling symptoms, Ayurveda aims to identify and correct the underlying digestive imbalance responsible for the disorder.

Ayurvedic Diagnosis (Dosha Imbalance)

In Ayurveda, IBS closely resembles a condition called Grahani Roga, which occurs due to weakness or imbalance of the digestive fire (Agni). When Agni becomes weak or irregular, food is not properly digested, leading to the formation of toxins (Ama) and disturbances in bowel function.

IBS is commonly associated with Vata Dosha imbalance, which causes irregular bowel movements, abdominal pain, and bloating. In some cases, involvement of Pitta or Kapha Dosha may also contribute to symptoms such as loose stools or heaviness in digestion.
