Jalaukavacharana
Ayurvedic Leech Therapy for Blood Purification
What is Jalaukavacharana ?
Jalaukavacharana is a classical Ayurvedic para-surgical therapy described in the Sushruta Samhita. The word “Jalauka” means leech, and “Avacharana” refers to therapeutic application.
In this therapy, specially selected medicinal leeches are applied to the affected area. These leeches gently draw out impure blood while releasing bioactive substances that improve circulation and promote healing.
Jalaukavacharana is considered one of the safest methods of Raktamokshana (bloodletting therapy) in Ayurveda.
Benefits of Jalaukavacharana

- Reduces inflammation and swelling
- Improves blood circulation
- Helps heal skin disorders
- Relieves pain and congestion
- Promotes faster tissue healing
How Jalaukavacharana Therapy Works ?
During Jalaukavacharana therapy, medicinal leeches are applied to the affected area after proper cleaning and preparation. The leeches attach to the skin and draw impure blood from the site. During this process, they release natural enzymes and anticoagulants that improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.
After the therapy, the leeches are safely removed and the area is cleaned and treated with herbal medicines to support healing.
