What is Migraine?

Migraine is a neurological headache disorder characterized by recurring episodes of intense or throbbing pain, usually affecting one side of the head. Migraine attacks are often accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), dizziness, and visual disturbances.

In many individuals, migraine attacks can last for several hours or even days, significantly affecting daily activities and quality of life. Certain triggers such as stress, irregular sleep patterns, hormonal changes, strong odors, excessive screen time, and certain foods may provoke migraine episodes.

While conventional treatments often focus on temporary pain relief, Ayurveda aims to address the underlying imbalance in the body and nervous system, helping reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks over time.

Ayurvedic Diagnosis (Dosha Imbalance)

In Ayurveda, migraine closely corresponds to a condition known as Ardhavabhedaka, described in classical Ayurvedic texts as a severe unilateral headache. It is primarily caused by the imbalance of Vata and Pitta Dosha.

Aggravated Vata Dosha affects the nervous system and causes pain, throbbing, and sensitivity, while excess Pitta Dosha may contribute to burning sensations, irritability, and increased sensitivity to light and heat. Lifestyle factors such as stress, irregular meals, lack of sleep, and excessive mental strain can aggravate this imbalance.

Panchakarma Treatment Protocol

Ayurvedic management of migraine often includes specialized therapies aimed at calming the nervous system and balancing the doshas:

  • Nasya Therapy – administration of medicated oils through the nose to clear head channels

  • Shirodhara – continuous flow of medicated oil over the forehead to relax the nervous system

  • Shirobasti – retention of warm medicated oil over the head for deep nourishment and relief

These therapies are performed under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic physicians.

Medicines Used

Common Ayurvedic formulations that may be recommended include:

  • Pathyadi Kashayam
