What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by red patches, thick scales, dryness, itching, and irritation on the skin. It occurs when the immune system triggers an accelerated growth cycle of skin cells, causing them to accumulate rapidly on the surface of the skin. This buildup results in scaly plaques that may appear silvery or reddish in color.

Psoriasis commonly affects areas such as the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, and sometimes the nails. The condition may vary from mild patches to extensive skin involvement. In many individuals, psoriasis is a long-term condition that tends to flare up periodically and may worsen due to stress, infections, certain medications, or environmental factors.

Although modern medicine often focuses on symptomatic management, Ayurveda aims to address the root cause of the disease through detoxification, blood purification, and balancing the doshas.

Ayurvedic Diagnosis (Dosha Imbalance)

In Ayurveda, psoriasis closely resembles Kitibha Kushta, a type of chronic skin disorder described in classical Ayurvedic texts. It is primarily caused by the imbalance of Vata and Kapha Dosha, along with Rakta Dushti (impurity or vitiation of blood).

Improper diet, consumption of incompatible food combinations (Viruddha Ahara), excessive intake of oily or processed foods, and accumulation of toxins in the body can aggravate these doshas. Over time, this imbalance manifests as dryness, thick scaling, discoloration, and itching of the skin.

Panchakarma Treatment Protocol

Ayurvedic management of psoriasis focuses on systematic detoxification and purification of the body through classical Panchakarma therapies such as:

  • Virechana – therapeutic purgation to eliminate toxins and excess Pitta from the body

  • Raktamokshana – blood purification therapy to remove vitiated blood

  • Takradhara – medicated buttermilk therapy that helps soothe skin inflammation

  • External herbal oil therapies for nourishment and healing of the skin

All procedures are performed under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic physicians.

Medicines Used

Herbal formulations commonly prescribed may include:

  • Mahamanjisthadi Kashayam

  • Khadirarishta

  • Arogyavardhini Vati

  • Neem-based herbal preparations

These medicines help purify the blood, reduce inflammation, and support healthy skin regeneration.

Expected Results

With a structured Ayurvedic treatment approach, patients may experience:

  • Reduction in itching and scaling

  • Decrease in redness and inflammation

  • Improvement in overall skin texture

  • Better control over recurring flare-ups

Case Studies

Many patients suffering from chronic psoriasis have experienced gradual improvement with Ayurvedic detoxification therapies, Panchakarma procedures, and long-term herbal medication. Treatment plans are individualized based on the patient’s constitution (Prakriti), severity of the condition, and underlying dosha imbalance.
